New paintings

  • I went to Abiquiu to paint last week. It is so beautiful out there.  The colors are fantastic.  I was able to do two canvases.  The trip was a good exercise and lesson in the concept of impermanence.  Everything changes constantly.  There is no better example than to watch colors change.  Thich Nhat Hanh stressed this concept and I see it so much in nature.  He taught that everything is impermanent -flowers, tables, mountains, bodies, feelings, perceptions, and consciousness. We cannot find anything that is permanent . The shadows change constantly and therefore the colors change. I could not keep up with the changes as the sun raced across the sky.  Van Gogh must have understood this because in a letter to his brother Theo he said that “I must warn you that everyone will think that I work too fast. Don’t believe a word of it…I must strike while the iron is hot.”  At any rate, these are the two paintings.
